Top 5 Things That Make A Helmet Perfect for Winter Rides

With none of the summertime worries of riding a motorcycle such as sweating and feeling suffocated inside the helmet, going on a motorcycle trip in the winter is the most convenient and enjoyable experiences ever! If you’re considering a motorcycle winter vacation, your helmet needs to have a few things to make it perfect for winter riding. We’ve got you covered, check out these 5 aspects that must be present in the helmet.

Presence of an anti-fogging visor

The most irritating concerns of riding a motorcycle in the winter is the visor fogging up! This happens because of the temperature differences inside and outside the helmet. When the temperature inside the helmet is warmer than the temperature outside, fogging occurs on the outer surface of the warmer side of the visor, which reduces visibility and makes it dangerous for you to ride especially in cloudy or low light conditions. You can continuously wipe the helmet with your hands but that is not convenient and it forces you to leave the control of the motorcycle in order to wipe the visor which is unsafe. The better and safer option is to buy a motorcycle helmet with Pinlock® anti-fogging system. Helmets with specially designed Pinlock® visors prevent fogging thanks to the presence of microstructures. The cost of a helmet with Pinlock® visor isn’t a lot more than a helmet without it. the price is completely justified if you consider the fact that the helmet will never fog-up again!

Wind protection

No matter how good the winter clothing you wear while riding a motorcycle, if there is even a tiny gap in between the helmet and your jacket, you will become completely chilled a matter of seconds! Cold wind entering the body through small gaps is your worst enemy while riding in winter. To avoid that, purchase a helmet with proper wind protection. If the helmet has specially installed neck liner at the bottom, it will significantly reduce the entry of cold wind. On top of that, consider lifting the collar of your riding jacket for additional protection.

Comfortable neck roll

Neck rolls are installed in modern motorcycle helmets to reduce the risk of a whiplash injury. But in addition to doing that, neck rolls also reduced the flow of cold air entering the body from beneath the helmet. The neck roll should be thick and comfortable and effective in keeping the wind out of your body.

Balaclava or skull cap

Motorcyclists who ride frequently in cold conditions, or those who reside in cold countries, always use a skull cap or balaclava under their helmets to stay warm. These are made of thin silk, cotton, or wool, which can be worn under the helmet without affecting the fit. A very good advantage of hiring a skull cap under the helmet is that you can continue to where it even after finishing the ride to keep your head warm. Many people also use it to sleep at night when the conditions get really cold.

Closable ventilation system

modern motorcycle helmets come with dynamic ventilation system that allows the air to pass to the helmet, thereby keeping the head cool during summers. But these ventilation systems must also have the ability to close down which will let you keep the warmth inside the helmet when you’re riding in cold weather. Check for these dynamic ventilation systems before purchasing the helmet. If your helmet is old and it does not have a closable ventilation system, consider getting a new one.
